Cantonese Choral Showcase Concert
Subtitle
Cantonese is a unique cultural symbol of Hong Kong, spoken by a great majority of local people, and as the mother-tongue of many who are born in this city. Songs in Cantonese bring much resonance to local people, though choral music in Cantonese is still very much a rarity. CU Chorus has been working on broadening the Cantonese choral repertoire by giving 3 special concerts with choral arrangements on Joseph Koo's classic TV theme songs (2014), numbers from Actor's Family's musicals (2016), and original works by Ng Cheuk-yin (2017). An all-Cantonese choral album Sing Our Own Song — Selected Hong Kong Choral Works was released in 2019. This year, CU Chorus will present more newly-commissioned original choral works and arrangements in Cantonese to the audience, from nursery rhymes, Cantopop, to brand new works. The Choral Suite on the much-acclaimed Cantonese musical A Tale of the Southern Sky will forms the highlight of this concert — after its 2017 reading and the 2020 staged performances, the musical will reignite its spirit in the form of a choral cantata with piano accompaniment, reviving many dramatic moments on the concert stage.
